Barbados is located to the east of the main Caribbean island chain, and it is the only coral island. Due to the contrast between the calm waters of the Caribbean Sea and the wind-whipped waves of the Atlantic, the island is quite diverse in its landscape and its vegetation. Although only a small island, (21 miles long by 15 miles at the widest point) Barbados has a population of approximately 260,000. It is divided into 11 parishes, each named after their parish church. The Capital, Bridgetown, is located on the South West Coast in St Michael. Golden Grove is in the South-Easterly Parish of St Philip.
The official language is English, but the Bajan dialect is widely spoken and sometimes just as difficult to understand as a foreign tongue! The main currency is the Barbados dollar, however the US dollar is widely accepted and the exchange rate is fixed at $1 US: $1.98 (or roughly 2) BDS.
Barbadians are very religious people, and although the main religion is Anglican, there are over one hundred different Christian denominations, not to mention the many other religions also represented on the island. It is customary for Bajans to go to Church, not only every Sunday, but at least once or twice mid-week too!
